During your school trip, students will hop between islands to experience the most the Azores has to offer, including Sao Miguel, which is home to hot springs, fumaroles at Furnas, and the Sete Cidades Lake.

Below we have outlined our suggested itinerary but you can tailor your trip to meet your learning goals, budget, and timeframe.

1

Fly to Ponta Delgada

Arrive in Ponta Delgada to explore the small capital city. You will find cobbled streets, a dramatic coastline and distinctive painted houses.

Furnas, Terra Nostra Botanical Gardens & Tea Plantation

One of the highlights of any trip to the Azores is the quaint village of Furnas.

Set in the green fields of Sao Miguel, Furnas has a variety of geothermal characteristics like bubbling bubbling hot mud pools and a large caldera lake. Learn more at the Interpretation Centre.

Enjoy a visit to Terra Nostra Gardens. The gardens are lush, with brightly coloured flowers, water features and tropical plants and a large geothermal pool.

The next stop is the local tea plantation, where the expert guides will explain the production process and you can sample the teas.

Lago de Fogo, Caldeira Velha, Geothermal & HEP stations

Lago de Fogo (Fogo Lake) has been a nature reserve since 1974 and is a stunning place to hike and learn about the caldera which formed the lake here.

On the north slope of the Fogo volcano, you will find Caldeira Velha, a series of warm waterfalls and hot pools where students can have a relaxing soak (€2 per safe is payable locally).

Connect with nature during a walking trail that heads into a green forest and snakes past waterfalls, scenic lookout points, and a geothermal and hydroelectric power plant.

Fly to Pico, Whalers’ Museum, UNESCO Vineyards & Gruta das Torres

Take the short flight to Pico.

Begin at the Whalers’ Museum where students will gain an understanding of how the economy and culture of the Azores have adapted without this industry.

Visit the UNESCO vineyards where grape plants are protected by black stone walls and learn about how the volcanic soil creates ideal growing conditions.

Explore one of Europe’s biggest lava tubes, Gruta das Torres, with your experienced guide.

Ferry to Faial, Caldeira, Capelinhos Interpretation Centre & Ferry to Pico

Start your day in Faial, by walking the trail around the Caldeira which provides unrivalled views of the island.

Faial is home to Capelinhos. The interpretation centre presents one of the best-documented volcanic eruptions worldwide.

Catch the Ferry from the harbour town of Horta and return to Pico.

Climb Mount Pico

Mount Pico is the highest peak in Portugal (at 2,351 metres!), the third tallest volcano in the Atlantic, and home to a variety of biodiversity.

Ponta Delgada, Sete Cidades & Ponta do Escalvado

Fly to Ponta Delgada.

Explore the town independently or follow the walking trail through cobbled streets and colourful houses.

To the west of Sao Miguel is the parish of Sete Cidades, which is home to one of the island’s most distinctive lakes. The two crater lakes at Sete Cidades are distinguished by colour, blue (Lagoa Azul) and green (Lagoa Verde). Students will visit and walk around the craters to see both lakes.

After taking in the view at Ponta do Escalvado, head to the beach at Mosteiros constructed on the flat land or faja land created by lava flows.

The final stop of the day is Gruta do Carvão, Sao Miguel’s longest lava tube.
