Mount Vesuvius and Pompeii

Mount Vesuvius is the only volcano to have erupted in mainland Europe in the last 100 years.

Created by the convergence of the African and Eurasian tectonic plates, the volcanic activity here is closely monitored by volcanologists to ensure the safety of residents living on its slopes.

Alpine guides will show you the main crater, explain the volcano’s geography and what it is like to live in the shadow of an active volcano.

The ancient Roman city of Pompeii was buried in the eruption of Vesuvius in 79AD, and preserved for all to see. History and physical geography students alike will be thrilled to see this UNESCO World Heritage site for themselves.
