Day

1

Arrive in Morocco

Arrive at Marrakech Menara Airport and meet your Tour Leader.

Get familiar with your surroundings with a walking tour of Marrakech Medina and Djemaa el-Fnaa. Explore the UNESCO-Listed site and its rich cultural heritage, vibrant street life and the ancient walled city.

Djemaa el-Fnaa, Marrakech’s famous central square, is bustling with street performers, storytellers and musicians – a great introduction to the culture!

End the day with dinner at your accommodation or a local restaurant.

Day

2

Marrakech Medina, Tagine Cooking Class and Djemaa el-Fnaa

Take a Caleche (horse-drawn carriage) tour of the city.

You’ll have the option to stop at Jardin Majorelle, an iconic botanical garden surrounded by vibrant blue buildings, lush greenery, fountains and a variety of exotic plants from around the world.

Next, head to a cooking class to learn about traditional Moroccan cuisine. Local chefs will teach students to make the perfect tagine bursting with local spices. While their dishes are cooking, students can learn to make authentic Moroccan mint tea to enjoy with their delicious meal.

Continue your tour on foot by exploring the medina. You’ll stroll through souks, see the old Koranic School and Koutoubia Mosque and learn about Morocco’s heritage.

After dinner, head to Djemaa el-Fnaa to soak in the vibrant culture by listening to traditional music and watching street performers.

Day

3

Amazigh (Berber) Village and Aït Benhaddou

Today, you’ll head to the High Atlas on the Tizi n’Tichka Pass travelling through the gully-eroded fold mountain landscape that is surprisingly rich in biodiversity including oases among other areas with near-desert conditions.

Despite this somewhat stark environment there are successful agriculture-based Amazigh (Berber) villages that have established sustainable practices for drought-prone environments. Here students can immerse themselves in local culture against a backdrop of the Atlas Mountains.

The time spent in rural areas offers the opportunity to contrast development and equality compared to life in the city.

Continue your journey to Aït Benhaddou. The majestic UNESCO World Heritage Site is perched on a hillside and surrounded by desert landscapes where the mud-brick architecture blends perfectly with the natural surroundings.

Students can learn about traditional life in the south by climbing through the narrow, winding alleyways of Aït Benhaddou and exploring its many abandoned houses. Although there are a few families that still call this historic fortified village home.

After dinner at your accommodation or a local restaurant, enjoy an evening of Moroccan storytelling

Day

4

Atlas Mountains

Start the day with a short hike in the foothills of the Atlas Mountains and marvel at deep valleys, iron-rich slopes, and high peaks. Students can learn about how plate tectonics created the Atlas Mountains and how glaciation and rivers have sculpted them into the landscape we see today.

After a picnic lunch, take part in community project work.

End the day with dinner at your accommodation or a local restaurant.

Day

5

Home

Travel back to Marrakech for some free time to explore the city before your flight home. Your students can use this final day to identify and analyse urban challenges in this emerging economy, and evidence of how they are being addressed. It’s a chance to pull together what they see in the city with what they’ve learned over the previous 5 days.
