“The trip was fantastic and truly unbelievable. Our students thoroughly enjoyed themselves, their favourite parts including the drive up to Vesuvius and the free time in Amalfi Town. The team at Discover The World Education were fantastic and any issues we encountered whilst away were dealt with quickly and efficiently. We plan on making this a yearly trip! ”

Day

1

Get to know the city

The moment you arrive in Rome you will be able to see evidence of the Roman’s nearly 700-year rule and the influence that time had on the city’s architecture, art and culture.

You will enjoy your first taste of that delicious Italian cuisine before heading to bed, ready for a busy first full day.

Day

2

Ancient Rome Tour

Straight into the action with one of the most iconic landmarks in the world; The Colosseum. This famous amphitheatre is probably best known for being home to the gladiators. It’s not until they are inside that students will be able to understand the true grandeur of the Colosseum. Not only can you imagine yourself as one of the tens of thousands of locals who visited, and started to get an understanding of the culture of the time, but you will also be able to comprehend Rome’s architectural and engineering prowess.

Next to another iconic Roman building, the Roman Forum. These ruins were once some of the most important buildings in Rome; the site of the ancient Roman Government buildings. Students will get a chance to explore the surviving buildings and learn more about their rich history which includes a place for public speaking, elections, law courts and so much more.

Your students may have already spotted Palatine Hill, towering over the Roman Forum, and now they get a chance to explore it. Palatine Hill was once one of the most desired areas of Rome, as it was once the home of emperors and the site of temples. Even more than clueing students into how the Roman Elite would have lived, Palatine Hill is also the centre of Rome’s most important myth – the legend of Romulus and Remus. Any historian interested in Ancient Rome will be delighted to visit Palatine Hill and learn about its remarkable history.

Your tour of Ancient Rome continues with a visit to Piazza Venezia. Here, you will be joined by a tourist guide who will talk you through the fascinating history of this central hub of Rome. Your guide will cover its long history from the Renaissance palace, to the embassy for the Venetian Republic through to the Office of Mussolini and the place of some of his most infamous speeches.

The final stop of the day before a delicious Italian meal is the Capitoline Museum. Here you will also have a tourist guide to talk you through their extensive exhibitions which showcase the rich history, art and culture of Rome. History students will be pleased to hear that the Capitoline Museums are the world’s oldest public museums, dating back to 1471.

Day

3

Catacombs of Rome and Ancient Ostia

It may be your final day in Rome but that doesn’t mean you will do any less exploring.

First up you will head to the Catacombs of Rome, where your tour guide will show you around the underground galleries used for centuries as cemeteries. You will journey through the heart of the city where you can see the funeral remains of burials made many centuries ago. Within the dark and humid corridors, you will begin to understand a buried part of Rome’s dark history.

Your final stop on this trip is a visit to Ancient Ostia. Students will take a guided tour of a family-run working farm to see local farming methods and techniques used to produce the world-famous mozzarella and other local produce. Choose from a range of demonstrations or hands-on workshops and learn how various products are made. Afterwards, sample some antipasti including local cheeses, olives, salami and bruschetta – the perfect send-off before you head home to put everything you have learnt to the test back in the classroom.
