Karen Southall, Teacher Tour Leader

A bit about me…

My main areas of teaching are in Geography and Travel and Tourism, which includes both human and physical geography. I have been teaching A level Geography and Travel and Tourism since 2001 and was subject leader until 2017 before taking up a travel specialist post with Discover the World Education. Over the years, I have also taught Environmental Science to Access students.

Why I love being a Teacher Tour Leader…

I became a TTL because I’m very passionate about field trips (especially to Iceland) and see them as a wonderful way to experience the world beyond the classroom.

I have been a visitor to Iceland since 2002 both as a trip leader and a tourist. I have invaluable experience of educational travel having lead groups with a variety of abilities and needs on trips both within the UK and abroad.

My favourite place in Iceland…

I have a very keen interest in glaciation, so enjoy any opportunity to spend time on the ice. It’s an ideal, hands on learning experience for students of all ages.

I have many favourite places in Iceland, but a visit to the Westman Islands, just off the south coast is always an exciting experience. It is here you are able to see the power of nature and how Icelanders live life on the edge with the constant threat from natural hazards.
