A bit about me…

I have been leading the Geography department at a Grammar School in Buckinghamshire since 2005. I have broadened my Geography awareness and seen how the subject has been taught in other countries having taught in New Zealand and Australia.

I continue to research and develop my geographical knowledge further through wider reading which has been recognised by achieving Chartered Geographer status and being a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society.

I also started the Malawi Exchange programme in 2006 which has morphed into the Malawi Initiative charity. This has over the last twenty years developed cultural links through the exchange. The Malawi Initiative also fundraises to improve educational facilities in Malawi and is part way through the construction of a second new secondary school having already built an entirely new secondary school. As well these projects the Malawi Initiative has helped 23 schools in the form of building classroom blocks, new pre-schools and providing educational, female empowerment and medical resources.

My favourite Geography book is The World Without Us, and I am currently reading Ocean by David Attenborough.

Why I love being a Teacher Tour Leader…

I love sharing my love of travel by taking students on various independently organised trips to places such as Iceland, South Africa, Morocco and the Volcanoes of Italy.

I always let my sixth formers choose the destination of their overseas trip, so I love the challenge of creating new economical trips and making the most of what the world can offer. I also love showing students Geography in the wider world by showing where theory meets reality.

Intricate planning and creative thinking has led to me receive an Innovation in Teaching award and a Teacher of the Year award.

I first used Discover the World nearly 20 years ago when I first went to Iceland. Having since been several times; the opportunity to share my experience as a Teacher Tour Leader seemed a great way to share my love of Iceland.

My favourite place in Iceland…

Every time I visit Iceland I see another new amazing site or view. Even places I have seen during one part of the year seems to offer another different amazing vista at another time of year.

My favourite view I have had so far is looking around the 360 views from the viewpoint in Skaftafell National park.

My favourite day trip has been at Snaefellssness Peninsula where every stop seemed to offer yet another beautiful view.

I feel like I have so much of Iceland I have to see and when the opportunity presents I would like to take advantage of my love of long distance cycling by touring the Route 1 road around the island.
