RP Iceland 2

Richard Porter

A bit about me…

I have taught all aspects of geography to A-Level for over 20 years, currently delivering the AQA specification. I have worked in schools in Leicestershire and London but am currently Assistant Head and Head of Sixth Form at an independent school in Bristol. I have led GCSE and A-Level geography fieldwork programmes throughout the UK and abroad and worked as an Educational Visits Coordinator. I have always enjoyed being involved with outdoor pursuits and hold a Hill and Moorland Leader award. I was recently one of a small group of teachers who travelled to Tanzania to establish links with a rural primary school in the Kibaha region.

Why I love being a Teacher Tour Leader…

I have used Discover the World since I first visited Iceland with a school group in 1999, and have returned to the country leading trips or travelling independently almost every year since. I am still captivating by the landscape, the geography and the people of this wonderful country and love sharing my knowledge and enthusiasm for all things Icelandic with visiting groups.

My favourite activity in Iceland…

Hiking amongst the glacial environments at Skaftafell is always a wonderful experience. I am a keen mountain biker and my goal is to cycle across the country.

My favourite place in Iceland…

Thingvallavatn is a beautiful place and provides endless opportunities for great photography.

I also enjoy spending time in Reykjavik and guiding groups around my favourite city.
