A bit about me…

Prior to taking a sabbatical from teaching, I worked in a variety of different schools as Head of Geography, Pastoral Deputy and NQT mentor. I am a trained Icelandic guide and am passionate about the academic and pastoral benefits of overseas outdoor education.
I have authored a number of articles on the importance of pastoral education, delivered CPD on new and exciting case studies and led the DTWE CPD workshops on Thinking and Writing like a Geographer. I have delivered a variety of webinars and presentations both for the GA and DTWE.

What drew you to the travel industry?

My love and passion for Iceland, and being able to give students the opportunity to travel and learn in different environments.

What do you love most about your job?

Having the opportunity to to organise and lead trips that stimulate both students and teachers; whilst sparking a real passion and love for geography, and of course for Iceland. I love helping teachers plan their trips, which ultimately enable more students to travel and gain confidence from this independent travel.

What is your favourite way to spend time when travelling?

Looking for hidden gems that no other tourists go to – usually trekking, finding that quiet spot and then capturing it as a memory – both mentally and digitally.

What is your most memorable travel moment?

One of my most memorable moments whilst guiding a student trip to Iceland was whilst on the top of the Eldfell volcano on Vestmannaeyjar, toasting bread and chocolate in the hot spots left from the 1973 eruption. Add to this, the view over Heimaey, across the Atlantic Ocean to the Vatnajokull ice cap on the main land. Whale watching from Husavik harbour does come a close second!

Which excursion or activity do you most recommend?

Swimming in the geothermally heated pools with the locals after work and enjoying their relaxed hot tub culture.

What are your top tips for organising the best school trip possible?

Planning, planning, planning. Take the advice of your travel specialist and tailor the trip to your specific requirements – the best for your school. It is so important to get the balance right – quality rather than quantity. There is so much to see and do in Iceland – don’t be tempted to overfill an itinerary!

Passion, enthusiasm and a big smile…..plus layers.
