With its stunning coastlines, sunny weather and volcanic landscapes, Sicily makes for an excellent activity week trip for students of all ages.
Sicily is a unique destination where you can fit sightseeing, pizza making, river tubing and climbing and hiking around Mount Etna, in one incredible trip!
Below is an example itinerary but our Travel Specialists can help you build an adventure trip that suits your school, curriculum and budget.
Catania, Orange Plantation and Pizza Making
Your group will fly into Catania airport, the main airport in Sicily, where you will meet your driver and hit the ground running with your first activity at the Orange Plantation Experience. Sicily is known for its unique cuisine which reflects its complicated history with influences from Greek, French, Spanish and Arabic food. The island also has rich farming opportunities because of the fertile volcanic soil. Students will learn this first hand at this stop.
This experience begins with a tour of the plantation followed by the chance to plant orange trees and taste some of the homemade citrus marmalades with fresh bread and make freshly squeezed juice.
Your foodie day continues in Taormina with a dinner made by your students themselves! Students will learn about traditional pizza making before building their own dinner with all their favourite toppings.
Mount Etna Hike and Lava Cave
On day 2 you will be introduced to Sicily’s most infamous resident, Mount Etna. Etna is one of the most active volcanoes in the world and stands at an imposing 3,350m tall.
You will begin your tour by traveling part way up the mountain by cable car before boarding 4×4 vehicles to reach the summit of Etna.
You experienced alpine guide will walk you around the crater rim which you take in the once in a lifetime views from the top of the volcano.
Next, your group will embark on a half day trek known as the Mount Etna Southern Flank Hike.
This hike begins with the ‘Black Mountain of the Pines’ nature trail which highlights Etna’s volcanic and botanical highlights.
You’ll continue on to Stazione Sud to see the otherworldly martian landscape of the Silvestri Craters before strapping on helmets and head torches and entering the Cassone lava cave.
River Tubing and Snorkelling
The Alcantara River was once blocked by a lava flow from Mount Etna, thousands of years ago. As a result the river found new paths and carved ravine and gorges around the area. Today these ravines have created an amazing opportunity for water sports.
You group will take to the water with the help of expert guides for either River Trekking or River Tubing.
You’ll navigate natural water slides and river crossings while wearing wetsuits helmets, life jackets and shoes plus, depending on the water level, you may also be able to float down the river in rubber tubes to ride the waves.
Now that you have experienced the river you will head to the sea for more water activities.
Discover the magnificent coastline between Acireale and the Cyclops Riviera by boat on your Tour. Then see the coastline from a different angle as you snorkel through the clear waters.
Crater Hike and Mud Baths on Vulcano
The Aeolian Islands are a small archipelago north of Sicily. The islands are very popular with tourists in the summer.
You will be visting the island of Vulcano, named after the Roman god of Fire Vulcan.
Ascend to the ‘Gran Cratere’ (main volcanic crater) with a trekking guide to experience the dramatic scenery and ocean views.
On your return to the main town, you might like to visit the thermal mud pools where you can bathe in warm, therapeutic mud.
Fly home
Your students will pick up any last minute souvenirs and head to the airport ready to tell their classmates about their unforgettable school trip to Sicily.
