A bit about me…

I previously taught Geography (GCSE and A Level) for nine years, which included being Head of Geography at a British International School in Dubai. This role involved the planning and organisation of numerous international school trips, including to Iceland. I decided to follow my love of travel and joined Discover the World Education where I now enjoy sharing my knowledge and experience of education, Geography and travel with schools.

What drew you to the travel industry?

‘Travel is the only thing you buy that makes you richer’. I discovered this when I embarked upon my first gap year to Asia and Australasia aged 18. This was the beginning of my travel bug; I have since explored around 95 countries and counting which inspired my move to the travel industry.

What do you love most about your job?

I love that I now get to share my passion for travel with others as part of my everyday job, and hopefully develop a lifelong love of travel for the students that travel with us. The feedback that clients provide post-trip is hugely rewarding. It is also great to work with like-minded teachers that share my interest in Geography, and experiencing new cultures and landscapes!

What are some of your most memorable travel moments?

A memorable moment has to be swimming in the Blue Lagoon in Iceland as day turned to night. The snow was falling on us as we enjoyed this volcanic natural wonder, a very special experience indeed! Seeing the spectacular Northern Lights on the same trip was the icing on the cake, and something the students will never forget.

Another unforgettable experience was reaching a deserted Everest Base Camp in Nepal. Taking in the awesome peaks and glaciers of the World’s highest mountains is forever etched in my mind.

What are your top tips for organising the best school trip possible?

Planning and preparation is key to a successful school trip as countries like Iceland are always in high demand. With this in mind it cannot be underestimated the importance of planning far ahead to secure the best value accommodation and guided experiences, especially for trips departing during school holidays!

What are your must-pack items?

Sunglasses, sunscreen and clothing layers to be prepared for all weather travel.
