Introduction

Making use of natural light, outdoor living spaces and panoramic views, ION Adventure Hotel is designed to inspire, revitalize and allow guests a retreat from the every day. This is more than a hotel, it is an experience, and its facilities and location make it the perfect choice for a single-centre short break, whether you are looking for adventure, relaxation or a combination of the two.

The softly lit lounge bar, with its cantilevered, full-length windows, is the ideal place for guests to unwind, enjoying a drink with family and friends whilst taking in the uninterrupted views and perhaps even witnessing the northern lights. Each of the 46 guest rooms is sound-proofed with soft lighting and offers organic bed linen and down duvets, plus free wifi, bathrobes, slippers and cosmetic amenities. The deluxe rooms boast added Icelandic-style features and have large picture windows with views of Lake Thingvallavatn or the surrounding mountains. There is a wide range of guided excursions on offer, including snowmobiling and glacier walks, or the option to hire a car and explore independently. The Hotel ION Story

Hotel ION is perched upon the slopes of Mt. Hengill on the site of the former Hotel Hengill, not far from Thingvellir National Park. Extensively renovated and extended the hotel appears suspended atop a series of high-seat pillars, a homage to Iceland’s first settler, Ingolfur Arnarson, who en route to Iceland in the year 874 threw his high-seat pillars overboard and sailed to where the gods brought them ashore.

Inspired by its environment, ION has incorporated natural features into its design including a feature “living wall” celebrating Icelandic flora.

Not far from Hotel ION, the Nesjavellir Plant nestles in one of the most geo-thermally active areas of Iceland. Providing power and electricity to the Reykjavik region, it is a compelling example of Iceland’s drive to harness the geo-thermal riches of the country into a sustainable and natural energy source. The plant is visible from Hotel ION, which takes its name from the energy rich region, but is in no way intrusive to visitors at the hotel. For those interested, it is even possible to arrange a visit to the plant to take a closer look at the fascinating processes at work.
