Larnach Lodge at Larnach Castle, Dunedin

Introduction

A 12-room lodge set in the beautiful rural area around Dunedin, this establishment is comprised of a classic colonial farm building, set within the impressive grounds of Larnach Castle.

Probably the last place that people would expect to find a house of this magnitude, the ‘castle’ was built over fifteen years, finally completed in 1887 to be the residence of William Larnach, a prominent entrepreneur and politician in colonial New Zealand. A notoriously haunted structure, the ballroom, which was a 21st birthday present to his favourite daughter Kate, is now supposedly haunted by her ghost, after the girl died of typhoid at only 26. Guests staying here receive complementary entrance into Larnach Castle, where the family’s turbulent and feud-ridden history is revealed.

The building’s stables, refurbished into a modern dining establishment, is where breakfast is served each morning. Dinner can be enjoyed in the castle’s dining room, where traditional New Zealand fare is served amongst the castle’s old-world elegance.

The rooms, found in either the stables or lodge itself, each have splendid views of the ocean below, and include private bathrooms, TVs, hairdryers, fridges, free WiFi and tea and coffee making facilities.
