The Duke of Marlborough, Russell

Located in Russell, ‘The Duke’ has been providing travellers with a relaxing place to stay for over 160 years.

All 25 rooms have a balcony with sea, hill or garden views and have been recently refurbished to provide modern facilities. Located right on the waterfront in the historically significant village of Russell in the stunning Bay of Islands, ‘The Duke’ sits directly across the bay from Paihia, a mere 10-minute ferry trip away. While staying in Russell, guests can organise excursions such as tall-ship sailing, dolphin tours, parasailing and visits to the Waitangi Treaty Grounds, among others.

The hotel’s restaurant sits on the waterfront in a weather-proofed veranda that guarantees regional dishes alongside quality views all year round. A casual dining option is available as well, where affordably priced, yet quality meals accompany a warm and comfortable ambience and many guests gather to watch the important games or relax by the fireplace.

All rooms are en suites and have TV and tea & coffee making facilities. The Waterfront Suites have panoramic views over the bay and a super-king bed, while the Sundeck Suites and Rooms overlook the courtyard, have queen beds and, as their name suggests, includes a sunny deck. Superior Rooms are charming with views overlooking the town with a queen bed or a queen plus single, while Standard Rooms are small and cosy with views overlooking the hills and a queen bed. There is also a self-contained bungalow available, sitting on the waterfront and featuring a large bedroom with one queen and one single bed, living/dining room with a kitchenette and a private outdoor area by the sea.
