Maryanne, our Digital Marketing Executive, was lucky enough to stay at the brand-new Canopy by Hilton Reykjavik City Centre. Read on to find out why she thinks this quirky hotel in the heart of Reykjavik is THE place to stay in 2017!

A mere stone’s throw from the famous Laugavegur main street, the Canopy is formed of six houses that played a big part in the area’s history. Today, chic Nordic décor fused with bright and bold colours create an inviting and familiar welcome for guests from around the world.

The first Canopy of its brand, a warm welcome by staff – or enthusiasts  as they’re officially known – is had when you walk through the doors. From the entrance of the lobby, you’re greeted by this cosy lounge area – the perfect spot for planning the days ahead…

As you make your way up the stairs, you’ll notice a sequinned-like art feature – the beginning of a faux waterfall that runs through each floor of the hotel.

With dinner reservations in place elsewhere throughout the rest of my time here, I had one opportunity to experience the hotel’s popular dining spot – the Geiri Smart Restaurant – for one of the most delicious meals I have ever experienced….

Menu

Appetiser: fermented potato foam, white fish, roe and crispy potato

Entrée: Icelandic roast lamb, parsnip puree and a selection of winter vegetables

Afterschocolate mousse, blood orange sorbet – topped with meringue and an Americano

Mouthwatering dishes and funky interiors at Geiri Smart

With low-lighting and a contemporary décor, you can expect an informal but vibrant ambiance here – particularly at the weekends, where locals really enjoy the city’s new dining scene. What a treat!

Feeling particularly full, it was time to retire to my room on the 4th floor. Featuring softer colours and furnishings, you’ll find all the mod-cons you’d expect from a 4* hotel: from sumptuous kingsize beds to a Bose soundsystem and Nespresso™ coffee machine to plush bathrobes and slippers – and even a charming little throw to keep you snug at night – they really have thought of it all here!

The next morning, after a visit to the impressive buffet for a tasty breakfast of bacon and avocado on toast and some locally-made skyr, I took some time to explore the rest of the hotel, before heading out to explore the rest of the city…
