Introduction
A 30-minute flight by light plane will carry you over the sparkling waters of the Hauraki Gulf and to the majestic Great Barrier Island (known locally as simply ‘The Barrier’).
An island which has been renowned (and often exploited) for its incredible natural resources, such as towering forests and whale-rich waters, this is now a natural haven found close to Auckland itself.
After breakfast at a local cafe, you will take an easy half-hour walk on the gravelled tracks and wooden boardwalks past giant Nikau palms and rare native flora and fauna.
Heading to the Kaitoke thermal springs, you will almost certainly spot one or two of the country’s ubiquitous ferns, before changing into your swim suit (or ‘togs’ to the Kiwis) and settling in for a soak in these naturally warm waters, if you so choose.
