Introduction

The largest and most accessible mainland gannet colony in the world, Cape Kidnappers near Hastings on the North Island is an incredible trip.

Climbing aboard an air-conditioned 4WD for a journey over the surrounding hill country, you will get well into this area’s remote yet incredible wilderness.

Upon arrival, you will find yourself within only a few metres of the birds and, without even having to leave the vehicle behind, you can view the birds nesting, preening, flying and performing the famous recognition ritual ‘Dance of the Gannets’. A stunning animal, even for non-bird watchers, these birds have remarkably clean lines, stunning white feathers and incredibly complex displays.

Interestingly, the young gannets are born completely black and it is only over the five years that it takes them to reach maturity that their feathers change into the pristine white we imagine them having. In May-August, when the gannets are overseas, a scenic safari tour is offered instead.
