Horse Riding in the South West 

Introduction

Experience riding the world’s most pure-bred horse on a choice of riding excursions close to Hveragerdi, around a half hour drive from Reykjavik at Eldhestar Horse Riding Centre (Vellir Farm).

Safety helmets are provided, as are rain gear and winter overalls, gloves and rubber boots (as appropriate to the season).

Countryside Charm 
A short horseriding tour in the Icelandic countryside, only a 30-minute drive from Reykjavik. This tour is ideal for those who would like a ‘taster’ of riding an Icelandic horse, with its unique gait, the ‘tolt’. Explore the gentle riding paths and the meadows around Eldhestar’s farm at Vellir. This tour is offered year-round, on request, starting from Hotel Eldhestar. (no transfers from Reykjavik)

The Heritage Tour
A 2 hour horse riding tour that takes you through meadows and lava fields. On your way you will pass several farms, which give you an idea of how the agriculture has developed in the last decades. During the tour you will have an opportunity to experience the gait tölt on the many good tölt paths. Meadows and Mountains
The tour starts on soft riding trails along the meadows around our Vellir farm before following the river Gljufura along an old route towards Ingolfsfjall Mountain, named after the first Norwegian Viking who settled in Iceland. Follow the slopes of Reykjafjall Mountain admiring the views of the landscape between the ocean and the volcanic mountains surrounding the village Hveragerdi before return to the farm.
