Introduction

The Orokonui Eco-Sanctuary is a 307-hectare stretch of native forest in Dunedin, found on the east coast of the South Island.

The only Cloud Forest in New Zealand where indigenous plants and animals can live in the wild without threat from the country’s introduced species, it is home to some of the country’s rarest and most fascinating forest wildlife.

Animals that have been re-introduced here include bats, jewelled geckos, the ancient tuatara and a myriad of bird species including the kaka, which was the first animal to be introduced, kiwi and the south island robin. An ecological success story, a number of animals have returned without human interference and it is now a marvellous destination for wildlife lovers.

This tour allows access to the eco-sanctuary, providing a 2 hour guided walk that takes guests into the sights and sounds of native New Zealand forest with an expert guide to provide commentary and answer questions.
