Tongariro Full Day Guided Walk, Taupo

Introduction

Tongariro National Park takes in the twin peaks of Tongariro and Ruapehu and is popular with hikers and skiers.

Rust red craters, black deserts and cobalt-blue and jade-green lakes make these landscapes among the most colourful in New Zealand and feature on what is acknowledged as one of the finest one-day walks on earth, the acclaimed Tongariro Alpine Crossing.

Beginning in the Mangatepopo Valley, which was formed by glaciers centuries ago, the first few easy kilometres belie the coming height of Mt. Tongariro, which this hike traverses in its entirety. A 19km track, it should only be tackled by those in good fitness, but with guides on hand to ensure your safety, little should worry the experienced hiker.

After an optional diversion to the refreshing Soda Springs, hikers head up into the saddle between Mt Ngauruhoe and Mt Tongariro, across what is one of the most difficult parts of the hike and is better known as the Devil’s Staircase.

Crossing the Southern Crater, hikers continue to climb onto the vibrant colours and magnificent views of the aptly named Red Crater. The top is without doubt one of the most stunning parts of the hike, with views out over Lake Taupo and, as walkers head down towards the Emerald Lakes, there is little doubt where they got their name.

The descent from here is not difficult, winding through coloured rock and lush forests out towards your pick up point and home!

Departing daily, weather permitting, the total walking time is approximately 7-8 hours, with 1 hour of scheduled stops and photo opportunities. Hikers must bring their own hiking boots, a day pack with a packed lunch and water as well as plenty of layers, as the temperature changes dramatically throughout the hike.
