Choose from a selection of excursions departing from Reykjavik Harbour on a search for minke whales, white beaked dolphins, harbour porpoises and humpback whales

White-beaked dolphins and minke whales are commonly sighted off Reykjavik’s coast, while other species, such as humpback and orca whales occasionally make an appearance. One of the best places to see whales in all of Europe, departures from Reykjavik have an impressive success rating and, if you happen to fall in the unlucky few, you will receive another tour for free.


Classic Whale Watching Tour
On this 3½ hour boat trip the experienced guide will help you spot Minke Whales, White-Beaked Dolphins, Harbour Porpoises and Humpback Whales. Following the Icewhale code of conduct for responsible whale watching respecting the wildlife on the bay keeping a distance from the animals and allowing them approach the boat so that their daily routine is not disturbed.

A sightings log and area map is kept on board and at the end of each trip a volunteer is asked to mark the sightings on exact co-ordinates on the map.

Duration: 3 – 3.5 hours
Departures: Daily at 13:00 (Year round), 09:00 (March – October) & 17:00 (May 15th – September 15th)

Express Whale Watching Tour
Travel on board the Rosin, (the Rose) or the fast catamaran Lilja, offering luxurious facilities combined with the latest technology, this is a different experience from the traditional wooden sailing vessel.

Reaching the area where whales are usually found more quickly, this is an ideal alternative for those who are short on time, but still would like a quality whale watching experience.

Duration: 2 – 2.5 hours
Departures: Daily at 10:00 & 14:00 (May – August) & 21:00 (June 15th – July 31st)

Whales of Iceland Exhibition

For the complete experience we have included Whales Of Iceland exhibition. It houses 23 man-made life size models of the various whale species found in Icelandic waters throughout its natural history including a 25 m. (82 ft.) long blue whale, a full-size sperm whale, the critically endangered North Atlantic right whale and many more.

Enjoy the interactive information stands and videos, whilst surrounded by soothing whale sound at this unique exhibit.
Tickets are valid for the whole day and include: Audio guide included (10+ languages available) and a live guided tour daily at 13:30.

Exhibition is open from 10am – 5pm every day except 25 December.


The Vessels

The Rose
Rosin (The Rose) was built solely for the purpose of whale watching, it is one of the fastest passenger boats with indoor seating marking a significant milestone for whale watching activity in Iceland. Rosin will get you faster to the whales as well as other locations around the bay you wish to visit!

This lovely luxurious ship is one of a kind in Iceland and can seat up to 130 passengers inside in a comfortable area with big windows for great viewing on both floors. And for those adventurous who want to stay outside it has extra large viewing decks so everyone can find a spot by the railing.

Lilja is a fast cruising catamaran and the newest addition to Special Tours’ fleet sailing from Norway in the spring of 2016 to its new home in Iceland. It has an economical cruising speed of 24 knots and was renovated in 2014 on the inside and on the outside in 2016.
