White Heron Sanctuary Tour, Whataroa

Introduction

This is a journey into New Zealand’s wilderness, and a magnificent tour that takes bird and nature enthusiasts alike up rivers and through bush in order to view some of this country’s magnificent birdlife.

Beginning with a short minibus ride, you will head to a bubbling river, where a 20 minute jetboat ride will carry you up into the lush and vibrant bush. From the jetty, it is just a short, 500 metre walk along a wooden boardwalk through the native bush to the viewing point.

On arrival, you will be at your leisure for 30-40 minutes, gazing out over the White Herons (or Eastern Great Egret) and the Royal Spoonbills who both nest here. Animals who are both strikingly white, they build their nests in the treetops and you can witness them going about the task of sitting the eggs and then feeding and raising their chicks. All tours are accompanied by a guide wet weather gear is provided.

Hotel pick up from Franz Josef is available at an additional cost. DOC entry permit fee and jet boat ride to Reserve is included.
