Your woodland could include:

  • Habitat havens to help attract insects and hibernation areas for amphibians
  • Wildlife wigwams with hedgehog boxes
  • Small wildlife ponds or bog gardens with aquatic plants create additional bio-diversity and watering holes for wildlife
  • Heritage fruit orchards and nutteries to add biodiversity and food production for your school

Not only will your woodland compensate your trip’s emissions for years to come, but there are so many benefits to growing your own woodland.

Benefits of growing a woodland

As well as helping you become responsible travellers, growing a woodland offers many benefits to student’s learning. Here are a few examples…

Offer new educational opportunities- What better place for students to learn about ecology, botany, wildlife, and conservation through hands-on experiences and observation in their own outdoor classroom?

Improve biodiversity- Heritage woodlands can support a diverse range of plant and animal species, contributing to local biodiversity.

Build Cultural and Historical Connection- Heritage woodlands include native trees and plants with historical and cultural significance. Students can learn about local history, traditional land use, and the importance of conservation.

Boost student’s well-being- Spending time in nature is proven to have positive effects on mental health and well-being. Students and staff can use the woodland as a place to relax and unwind.

Encourage Hands-On Learning- Your students can get involved in planting, maintaining, and caring for your woodland, this can improve self-confidence, and teamwork, and build an appreciation for the environment.
