Religion, Philosophy and Ethics Trip to Rome Italy

4 Days from £545pp

Based on 40 students travelling with 4 teachers (free places)

Where's the ultimate destination for students studying Catholicism? It doesn't get any more impressive than Rome. The city is closely affiliated with the Catholic faith and has over 900 churches!

Perhaps the biggest draw to Rome for religious students is the country hidden within Rome. With around 825 locals, the Vatican may be the smallest country in the world, but what it lacks in size, it makes up for in learning opportunities. The buildings, sculptures, paintings, and local people tell the story of how the second-biggest religion in the world sits in modern Roman life.

All our trips are bespoke, so whether you're looking to combine with another subject, add a spin on the below example itinerary, or design something completely new, our Travel Specialists will help you create the ideal trip.

What's included

  • Return flights to Rome
  • Hold luggage for all passengers
  • 3 nights' accommodation
  • Half board basis (breakfast and evening meals)
  • Guide and/or tour assistant where specified
  • All activities mentioned in the itinerary
  • Our Covid Money-Back Assurance

Day

1

Baroque Rome tour

As you arrive in Rome you will jump straight into the action with a Baroque city tour.

First on the list is the Trevi Fountain. The fountain attracts tourists from all around the globe, hoping to throw a coin into the fountain to guarantee they will return to Rome one day.

Next, students will visit the Pantheon, a well-preserved ancient Rome temple that has since been converted into a Catholic Church. The Pantheon perfectly demonstrates the fusion of influence that both the ancient Romans and the Catholic Church have had on the people in the city.

Now students will get a chance to visit one of Rome’s most iconic landmarks; the Spanish Steps, which are named after the Piazza di Spagna, so called because of its proximity to the Spanish embassy.

The final stop of the day is the Piazza Navona, a beautiful example of Baroque architecture and art.

Day

2

Vatican City

Day 2 will allow students to finally visit Vatican City and the day may get to start with a bang; a glimpse of the Pope himself.

Any Wednesday that the Pope is in Rome, visitors get a chance to come and see him. Students will get a glimpse into a traditional Catholic moment as visitors receive the Papal Blessing or Apostolic Blessing from the successor of the Apostle Peter during their visit.

Next students will get a chance to enjoy a tour of the Vatican, starting with the iconic Vatican Museums. The museums, founded in the 16th century by Pope Julius II now host 70,000 works, of which 20,000 are on display.

Next up, is the well-known Sistine Chapel. This chapel is at the Apostolic Palace, the official residence of the pope. This chapel is very important to Catholics as it is the place of the papal conclave, the process by which a new pope is selected. Students will definitely gaze in wonder at Michelangelo’s masterpiece frescos and ceiling.

Describing the next stop as an art museum is a complete understatement. The Raffaello’s Rooms situated in Apostolic Palace, are four rooms painted by the famous Renaissance artist, Raphael, and his pupils. Each room represents a different theme and students will be awe-struck at what is now considered the most important frescoes of the High Renaissance.

The final stop of the day is Peter’s Basilica, the largest church in the world. Did you know? Christians believe that Peter’s Basilica is the burial site of Saint Peter, chief among Jesus’s apostles.

Day

3

Christian Rome Tour

By day 3 students will already be able to see why Rome is so important to Christians, and today they will get to visit some of the most iconic Churches that add to this. Starting with, the Basilica of San Clemente. This church may not be the largest in Rome but its long history and architecture make it a must-visit.

Next up, students will be joined by a tourist guide as they visit the Basilica of St. John Lateran, the oldest church in the Western world. Religious students will be keen to understand all about the fact that it serves as the seat of the bishop of Rome, the Pope.

Finally, students will get to visit the Catacombs of St. Callixtus. These tombs are steeped in history and host the tombs of several popes from the 2nd to 4th centuries. In addition to Popes, around half a million Christians were buried here, among them many martyrs. A fascinating visit for anyone interested in the history of Christianity in Rome.

Day

4

Goodbye Rome!

Before heading home, students will get a last chance to explore the city with some free time. This means they can have a final look at some of the epic churches and monuments in the city.

Then fly home and apply everything they learned back to the classroom.
