Full description

Gothenburg is a compact city, easy for sightseeing on foot or by tram. Packed full of chic shops, interesting museums, galleries, and a bewildering array of cafes, bars and restaurants, foodies especially will enjoy this place. In fact, this entire holiday is a gastronome's delight with so many wonderful seafood restaurants up and down the coast, and the chance to go on a Shellfish Safari - highly recommended!

This region lends itself perfectly to creating your own self drive holiday, as laid back as you wish, as there are many places to stay and visit, in relatively close proximity and all with their own experiences. There are several delightful hotels and smaller guesthouses which act as your base for exploring the area - choose to stay in just one or hop between different locations and enjoy the warm hospitality. The highlights mentioned above are just a few of our recommendations, there are countless more to discover at your leisure.

Things to see and do

Sea Food Safaris - This stretch of coastline is considered the home of Swedish seafood. Join an Oyster Safari in Grebbestad or a Mussel Safari in Ljungskile and get a real taste of the sea.

Outdoor pursuits - with an archipelago of over 8,000 islands the best way to discover new places and get a different perspective is to explore by kayak. There are many opportunities to paddle along the coast, it's great fun and even suitable for beginners. With many walking trails in the area you can be immersed in nature in no time and enjoy spectacular views.

Nordens Ark - located 120km north of Gothenburg, the wildlife park works to ensure endangered species have a future. A great place for all the family with about 80 species on show, it has Amur Tigers, Pallas cats, wolverines, Lynx, birds and amphibians.

Lacko Castle - a medieval castle situated on the shore of Lake Vanern, the largest lake in Sweden. An imposing 17th century baroque building with over 200 rooms and dazzling gardens surrounded by high walls.

Gunnebo House and Gardens - one of Sweden's most beautiful historic houses from the 18th century and just 15 minutes from Gothenburg. There are daily guided tours in the summer season.

Torpa Castle - beautifully situated on the southern shore of Lake Asunden, one hour east from Gothenburg. Come for medieval days and market, let the children dress up as knights and princesses, or take a guided tour.

The Dalsland Canal - one of Europe's most beautiful waterways, the Dalsland Canal turns a whole labyrinth of lakes, rivers and canal passages into a boater's dream. Join a canal cruise and enjoy the scenery passing you by.

Carlsten Fort on Marstrand Island - definitely worth a vist, the island is a west coast gem with colourful wooden buildings, vibrant harbours and the imposing Carlsten Fort its main attraction.

Vitlycke Rock carvings - a collection of petroglyphs near Tanumshede which were declared a World Heritage site in 1994. Carvings date from the late Bronze age and over the years new carvings were added, the last made just before the birth of Christ.
