Overview

This laid-back summer self-drive follows West Sweden's beautiful coastline from Gothenburg to Fjallbacka, showcasing some of the country's best kept secrets. Discover a myriad of islands and skerries dotted with brightly painted houses, stay in picturesque villages, visit historic sights and indulge in some fine seafood.

Starting in Gothenburg, enjoy a day sightseeing in this compact and charming city, which is best explored on foot, by tram and canal boat. It is packed full of chic shops, interesting museums, galleries, and an enticing array of cafes, bars and restaurants - foodies especially will enjoy this place. In fact, this entire holiday is a gastronome's delight with so many wonderful seafood restaurants up and down the coast, and the chance to join a shellfish safari, which we highly recommend.

Beyond the city, the region lends itself perfectly to leisurely exploration with a wealth of places to visit and outdoor activities set against scenic backdrops and in relatively close proximity to each other. Nordens Ark wildlife park, the fort on Marstrand and the Bronze age rock carvings near Tanumshede are not to be missed as well as the chance to go sea kayaking in the calm waters off Fjallbacka

Days 6-7 at leisure around Fjallbacka

With Fjallbacka as a base there are a host of attractions to visit in the area. The remote Weather Islands, easily reached by a regular boat service, and the Koster Islands with their unspoilt beaches and marine national park, are definitely worth exploring. Visit the UNESCO site at Tanum for outstanding examples of Bronze Age art carved some 3,000 years ago. Enjoy a Seafood Safari in Grebbestad and enjoy mouthwatering langoustines, lobster, mussels and oysters.

Extend Your Stay

Discover Dalsland

The Dalsland province in West Sweden is like a microcosm of the country as a whole. Located on to the west of Europe’s third largest lake, Lake Vanern, it boasts verdant forests, mountains, fertile plains, white sandy beaches, canals, lakes and archipelagos.

The area is perfect for outdoor pursuits, especially those on the water with canoeing, kayaking, fishing and boat trips in abundance. As well as many possibilities for hiking on well-marked trails with varying terrain and experiences.

The Dalsland Canal

One of the highlights of the area, the canal is a historic transport route turned into visitor attraction.

A boat tour takes visitors into the heart of the most lake-rich landscape in Sweden. The organised tours run in the summer from the end of June to end of August on passenger boats M/S Storholmen and M/S Dalslandia, starting in either Bengtsfor or Haverud. They take approximately 5 hours, and can combine with a return train journey.

Where to stay

We recommend staying at either Baldersnas Manor and Upperud 9:9.

Baldersnas estate in Dals Langed dates from the 18th century and has a modern accommodation surrounded by a lovely park and lake. There is a choice of accommodation in the main manor house as well as two unique glass cabins set in a secluded position in the grounds.

Formally a mill, Upperud in Asensbruk offers five rooms beautifully renovated from the five-storey grain silo to offer unique accommodation. Serving locally sourced, organic homemade food, the property is situated next to a lake make for some glorious sunsets.
