This small group holiday combines a variety of guided hikes by day with comfortable hotel accommodation by night, offering the perfect way to explore the spectacular alpine landscapes of Canada’s Rocky Mountains. Exploring on foot allows the chance to escape the main tourist trails and appreciate the wild beauty and remote wilderness on offer throughout the Rockies.
From the well-known resort towns of Banff, Lake Louise and Jasper, you’ll hike through the heart of the Canadian Rockies. Take in vivid lakes, vast glaciers, alpine meadows and the soaring mountains that tower above it all. You may be lucky enough to spot elk, bears, and big horn sheep as you walk. All whilst enjoying the company of like-minded travellers and a knowledgeable guide.
Your guide will lead you on carefully selected day hikes, ranging from gentle lakeside strolls to more demanding mountain hikes. Every trail is optional, and your guide will outline the route and difficulty in advance, adapting plans to suit the group and local conditions.
Best of all, this hotel-based holiday means you’ll carry only a light daypack, returning each evening to a comfortable bed so you can wake up refreshed and ready for the next day’s adventure.
Itinerary
On arrival you will be met and transferred to your hotel. Meet your guide for a pre tour briefing this evening.
After breakfast, hop aboard the bus and set off for the stunning Banff National Park. This afternoon, lace up your boots for the first hike of the trip. You may stroll along the shores of Lake Minnewanka or tackle one of the scenic mountain trails near Banff, offering spectacular views. Return to Banff for a 2-night stay.
Hiking time 2-3 hours.
Set off on a full day hike to discover mountain passes, hidden lakes and pretty alpine meadows high above the treeline. This evening enjoy time at leisure to browse the shops, take a dip in the warm sulphur pools or relax in one of Banff’s many restaurants.
Hiking time 5-7 hours.
Just under an hour’s drive from Banff lies the picture-postcard setting of Lake Louise. Your guide will recommend a 3.5km path with 400m elevation gain to a historic tea house overlooking a stunning alpine lake. Perched on the edge of Lake Agnes, this charming tea house was built in 1901 and continues to welcome hikers today. From here, a network of easy to demanding trails tempt you to explore further. You may choose the rewarding 15km circuit into the Plain of Six Glaciers, or opt for a 2.5km climb to a nearby summit for exceptional views of nearby peaks and distant landscapes.
Hiking time 3-5 hours.
Today you have the option of a white-water rafting trip on the Kicking Horse River from Golden, BC (additional cost). Alternatively, explore on foot with an 18km circuit through two flower-filled mountain passes at 1830m and 2180m – rewarded by spectacular views of Emerald Lake. If you’re up for some sightseeing, Yoho National Park also offers gems like the Natural Bridge, the mighty Takakkaw Falls, and the famous Spiral Tunnel.
Hiking time 6 hours.
Your journey along the Icefields Parkway includes plenty of scenic stops for short walks and photo opportunities as you travel through the heart of the Rockies. Take in the striking turquoise waters of Peyto Lake and the vast Columbia Icefields, from where glacier-fed rivers eventually reach three different oceans. For a spectacular view of the Saskatchewan Glacier, hike 2.5kms to a windy ridge at 2260m. At the end of the day check in to your Jasper hotel for the next 2 nights.
Hiking time 2 hours.
Jasper offers endless activities – take a dip and enjoy a picnic at Pyramid Lake, head out mountain biking, try your hand at canoeing, go horse riding, and more. Or join your guide for a trip to Maligne Lake and follow an 8km loop that climbs into the hills, reaching a 2790m peak overlooking the lake below.
Hiking time 2-6 hours.
On your way back to Calgary there may be time to stop at the impressive Athabasca Falls and enjoy a final hike. Your farewell to the Rockies is an 8 km hike into a pass near the spectacular Columbia Icefields. Arrive into Calgary in the evening.
Hiking time 2-3 hours.
Bid farewell to your fellow-hikers as your holiday ends with a transfer to the airport.
