Combine the Arctic city of Tromso with the dramatic scenery of Senja Island on this inclusive winter break in Northern Norway. Senja is located south-west of Tromso, high above the Arctic Circle and is the second largest island in Norway. Home to some amazing landscapes, it provides a ideal setting for adventure and northern lights viewings.
Your adventure starts and ends with nights in Tromso, a city steeped in history and offering many attractions such as the Polar Museum, as well as excellent shops, restaurants and cafes.
On your second day journey by express boat to Finnsnes and transfer to Mefjord Brygge Hotel. Located in the small village of Mefjordvaer on the northern coast of Senja this is your base for an all-inclusive adventure. With all meals and up to five excursions included, you’ll be able to fully immerse yourself in your surroundings.
The return journey takes you from Finnsnes to Tromso by Hurtigruten coastal voyage, a great way to relax and enjoy the scenic coast before arriving in Tromso for the last night.

In winter, temperatures lower and the snowfall offers the chance for different activities including dog sledding and snowshoeing. It is also a good time for northern lights viewings
Itinerary
On arrival in Tromso make your way by the regular airport coach to the city centre hotel (payable locally). Enjoy some time in the city with excellent restaurants and bars to choose from before staying overnight in the city.
Spend the morning at leisure to visit Tromso’s many attractions such as the Arctic Cathedral; Polaria Arctic aquarium; Polar Museum; cable car to Fjellstua for spectacular views; Nordnorsk Kunstmuseum and even its own brewery. In the afternoon take the express ferry which takes 1 hour 20 minutes (payable locally) to Finnsnes. You will be met and transferred to Mefjord Brygge in time for dinner.
Mefjord Brygge, Senja
After breakfast head out on your morning activity. You will be transfer to the dog kennels for a briefing before heading out on the snowy trails driving your own dog sled team. Setting off in pairs, you’ll switch driver and passenger on route. Winter boots, overalls, hot drinks and biscuits are included.
Arrive back at the hotel early afternoon for lunch and time to relax – perhaps enjoy a sauna or hot tub, or explore the village before the evening meal. Afterwards there is a short presentation about the northern lights and arctic wildlife followed by a northern lights safari driving to Senja’s most iconic locations to provide the perfect background for photographs.
Join the Arctic Boat Safari, departing at 10.30am. The boat has comfortable seating inside and warm overalls are provided for time on deck. The 3-hour trip focuses on experiencing Northern Norway’s marine life, spotting white-tailed sea eagles and cruising along the fjords admiring the coastal landscape. Between December and January it may be possible to see humpback and orca whales, but this is not guaranteed. Back at the hotel you have lunch and the afternoon is free time before the evening meal.
Later in the evening on the winter trips you head out on a guided snowshoe walk in search of the aurora, while enjoying the arctic surrounds.
After breakfast, transfer back to Finnsnes to connect with the Hurtigruten* coastal boat departing at 11.30am. Arrive in Tromso at approximately 14.15 and check-in to your hotel for an overnight stay before spending the rest of the day at leisure exploring the city.
*Hurtigruten operate 5 to 6 days per week, if there is no Hurtigruten departure the return to Tromso will be by express boat (payable locally)
Explore the city at leisure or if time permits perhaps enjoy an optional excursion before making your way to the airport (payable locally) for your flight home.
