Weekend escape

This is the ideal trip for a weekend escape or perhaps a mid-week getaway

This action-packed winter break offers a fabulous introduction to Finnmark, Norway’s northernmost and least populated county that is steeped in Sami culture. Forests, mountains and fjords characterise the landscape, which is ideally suited to outdoor adventure and the area boasts an impressive record of northern lights sightings. Combine time exploring Alta, the largest city in a region, with husky sledding, sleeping on ice in Sorrisniva Igloo Hotel and searching for the northern lights.

Begin in Alta with time to visit the modern and elegant Cathedral of the Northern Lights, the Alta Museum with samples of its famous rock art dating back to 4200BC and embark on a guided chase for the aurora in the evening.

You’ll then head out into the wilderness to a nearby husky lodge for a thrilling dog sledding experience and overnight in a heated lavvu. Mush your own team through the forest trails in the low-light of the Arctic afternoon then return to the lodge for a dip in the Jacuzzi followed by a two-course dinner. Finally, retire to you lavvu for the night

Continue to Sorrisniva Igloo Hotel, arriving in time for lunch in the restaurant and a tour of the hotel. There are opportunities for evening excursions including a northern lights hunt with reindeer sledding and Sami culture before your overnight experience sleeping in an ice room.

On arrival in Alta make your way to the city centre hotel by the regular airport bus or taxi (payable locally). Stay for 1 night on breakfast basis. In the evening embark on a northern lights chase.
