Overview

Discover three Arctic Islands and experience a total eclipse of the sun from the unique perspective of a polar expedition ship. This once-in-a-lifetime voyage covers many miles of extraordinary coastline and offers the chance to encounter wildlife such as polar bear, arctic fox and musk oxen. Commencing in Spitsbergen and ending in Iceland, this adventurous voyage also explores the rugged and seldom visited northeast coast of Greenland. This is the Arctic of Viking lore and legend – a world of icy fjords, fiery volcanoes and glittering, ice-bound seas!

To witness the eclipse itself, your ship will be positioned in the centre of the shadow of the moon on the isolated coast of east Greenland. You will be uniquely placed for the best possible views to observe this natural phenomenon!

Itinerary

Arrive into Longyearbyen, the largest community in the Svalbard archipelago. In the afternoon you will board the vessel and begin your expedition. Get ready for a great adventure ahead!

Spend a day exploring Spitsbergen’s northwest coast, which features calving icebergs, historic whaling stations and remote trappers’ camps. Weather permitting, you may board the Zodiacs for views of spectacular glaciers whilst keeping a look out for polar bears and walrus. Brunnich’s guillemots, little auks and kittiwakes also nest here in their thousands.

While sailing the historic Greenland Sea your expedition team will entertain you with fascinating presentations on the wildlife and history of the Arctic. Keep an eye out for fin whales, encroaching sea ice and seabirds as you go.

East Greenland is one of the least visited and most remote parts of the island. Your days sailing along the coastline here will be guided by weather and ice conditions, with each day and each excursion presenting new adventures. The region is a sight to behold, boasting a mesmerising maze of vast glaciers, steep mountains and breath-taking fjords.  Conditions permitting you may visit the lively cascades at Kap Humboldt, which provide a microclimate for spectacular hanging gardens. The Kong Oskar Fjord provides glacier-carved mountains and world’s biggest fjord system, Scoresby Sund, offers the chance to weave through a maze of grounded icebergs in the Zodiacs.

On 12th August 2026, the goal is to get into the perfect spot to witness this natural phenomenon. The ship will be anchored close to shore, right at the heart of the total eclipse – that magical moment when the moon completely blocks out the sun’s light. Sheltered from the ocean, the calm landing beach will provide unobstructed view towards the western sky.

Thanks to advanced meteorological forecasts and a bit of good fortune, you and your fellow adventurers will come together under clear skies to marvel at this spectacular event. At 4:37 in the afternoon, watch as the moon casts its shadow over the dramatic and isolated Blosseville Coast. Totality will only last for a brief 2 minutes and 17 seconds, so make sure to savour every second of this unique experience!
