Itinerary & Accommodation

Itinerary & Accommodation

Day 1: arrive Iceland

After checking in to your hotel explore Reykjavik independently and enjoy dinner at one of the many fabulous restaurants that the capital has to offer.

Day 2: Reykjavik - Akureyri

Today travel along the scenic Hvalfjordur fjord and then onwards to Grabrok volcano crater, formed by a fissure eruption approximately 3400 years ago, which rises about 170 above ground and on a clear day offers spectacular views over Borgarfjordur region. In the afternoon visit a natural history and seal museum in a small fishing village in north west Iceland and stroll around the local harbour. Continuing further north stop at the turf church of Vídimyri which has been extensively restored to its original form. Continue to the capital of the north, Akureyri for your overnight.

Day 3: Akureyri - Myvatn

This morning explore Akureyri and visit the botanical gardens. In the afternoon travel to the magnificent Godafoss, waterfall of the gods. Then continue to Lake Myvatn. The lake's unique features are shaped by nature - strange lava formations, volcanic craters and beautiful bays. Stop at the bizarre lava formations at Kalfastrond followed by a walk around the many pseudocraters. Stroll through the mysterious lava field of Dimmuborgir, see the tephra cone Hverfjall and end the day with a relaxing soak at Myvatn Nature Baths.

Day 4: Myvatn - Egilsstadir

This morning enjoy a hike in a lava labyrinth at Dimmuborgir, possibly even catch a glimpse of the trolls who are said to live there. This afternoon visit the hot spring area of Namaskard with bubbling mud pools and steaming solfataras. And then head through the uninhabited highlands and moon-like surrounding to East Iceland and with some luck, you might see an Arctic fox or reindeer. From June to August the tour includes a detour to Dettifoss, Europe's most powerful waterfall in the northern part of Vatnajokull National Park.

Day 5: Egilsstadir - Kirkjubaejarklaustur

Today admire the dramatic fjord landscape and the small picturesque fishing villages spotted along the rugged coastline. In the afternoon continue south catching a glimpse of Vatnajokull - Europe's biggest glacier that dominates south east Iceland. The next stop is Jokulsarlon, a glacial lagoon filled with icebergs. Explore the extraordinary site and you might catch a glimpse of seals swimming in arctic waters. Then skirt around the southern part of the glacier and spend some time in Vatnajokull National park - Europe's second largest national park.

Day 6: Kirkjubaejarklaustur - Fludir

Today travel west on day filled with natural wonders along the way. Gaze out over the black sand beaches and wave-lashed cliffs near Vik and feel the spray on your face as you stand at the foot of Skogafoss, an impressive 60m high waterfall. Continue on to Seljalandsfoss, where it is possible to walk behind – be prepared to get wet! Then continue to your accommodation for this evening.

Day 7: Fludir - Reykjavik

A day of classics! The day starts with a visit to Fridheimar farm for an entertaining horse show before continuing to the famed Golden Circle. See the much admired Gullfoss, a spectacular two-tiered waterfall; watch the geyser Strokkur erupt and explore Thingvellir National Park, where the historic ancient parliament assembled among tectonic rifts and brooding mountains. Then travel to the capital for your overnight stay.

Day 8: depart Iceland

Transfer to Keflavík Airport in time for your flight home.
