Overview

This self drive holiday is the ideal introduction to Alaska's highlights and takes in the mountains and wildlife of Denali National Park and the glaciers and marine wonders of the Kenai Peninsula. Following a circular route from Anchorage, this well-paced itinerary focuses on South Alaska, the home of North America's highest peak, Denali.

Starting and ending in Anchorage, this self drive itinerary is ideal for those short on time and provides a great contrast between Alaska's coastal splendours and the towering peaks of the state's interior.

Day 1 arrive Anchorage

Arrive in Anchorage, Alaska's largest city located on the shores of the Cook Inlet, and make your own way to your hotel for an overnight stay.

Day 2 Anchorage - Seward (204 km)

Collect your rental car today and drive south to the scenic Kenai Peninsula. Your destination for today is the port town of Seward, gateway to Kenai Fjords National Park. Spend two nights in Seward.

Day 3 Seward

Enjoy a full day at leisure. You may wish to visit the fascinating Alaska SeaLife Center, explore Exit Glacier or join a scenic cruise out through the fjords - weaving between icebergs you may spot sea lions and whales against a spectacular backdrop of glaciers.

Day 6 Denali National Park

Today you will enjoy a guided bus tour into the heart of Denali National Park (approx. 4-6 hours in duration). Some of this areas most iconic large mammals, such as grizzly and black bears, wolves, caribou, moose and Dall's sheep, can be seen by lucky visitors. The more-often seen small mammals include arctic ground squirrels, red squirrels, foxes and marmots can also be spotted. The bird life of Denali is also varied and impressive. Golden eagles are often seen as well as ravens, mew gulls, gray jays and occasionally bald eagles.
