Overview

This semi-escorted tour takes you on a spellbinding journey through the magical Norwegian fjords visiting some of the most scenic and well-known places including Bergen, Sognefjord and Flam. Spectacular mountains, waterfalls and fjords provide the backdrop for rail journeys, cruises and cultural tours. Let your guide take you from one enchanting location to the next, finishing in Oslo, Norway’s vibrant capital.

The group tour includes two nights in Bergen, two in Balestrand and two in Oslo, staying in standard or superior hotels on a breakfast basis. Two dinners are also included in Balestrand.

The magical journey

Travelling independently between the different locations is as much a highlight as each destination itself with natural beauty at every turn. Start with a sightseeing tour of Bergen, the gateway to the fjords and a UNESCO World Heritage City. Continue by boat along the Sognefjord, the longest and deepest in Norway making your way to the village Balestrand where you have time to relax amidst stunning scenery.

The final leg of the tour is by trains and features the famous Flamsbana railway. The 20-kilometre winding track is considered to be one of the most scenic rail journeys in the world, taking you through picturesque landscapes to the mountain village of Myrdal. Change trains and continue onward to Oslo with plenty of time to explore the Norwegian capital city.

Group size: typically between 35 and 45 participants.

Itinerary

On arrival in Bergen, make your way to your hotel (payable locally) for a two-night stay. There are regular busses running from the airport to the centre of the city. The rest of the day is at leisure. Bergen is a UNESCO World Heritage city and a European city of Culture with many attractions in the city itself and in the region.

After breakfast, meet your local guide at the reception of your hotel at 10:00 and enjoy a walking tour of the city of Bergen. Pass through the most emblematic places such as the Hanseatic Bryggen, with the church of Mary, the Hakon fortress and the famous fish market. You can visit the Floibanen Funicular, which will take you on the top of the Mountain Floyen, for overall view of the city.

An early breakfast before meeting in the hotel lobby area with luggage for the short walk to the port where the journey continues by boat to Balestrand. Boat departs at 08:00 with arrival in Balestrand at 11:55 (schedule subject to change). Cruise along Sognefjord – the King of the fjords and the longest and deepest in Norway. The cruise continues to the village Balestrand where on arrival you walk to your hotel for two nights. The rest of the afternoon is at leisure.

The day is free for you to relax and enjoy the fjord surroundings. There are several hikes in the area you can take from the village or it is also possible to join an optional full day excursion to Fjaerland (this excursion must be booked in advance either at the time of booking your holiday or with the tour guide on day 1). On this trip take a scenic journey to the small village of Fjaerland passing tiny villages and waterfalls to where the fjord meets the glacier.

Your journey on the Sognefjord continues today. The initial part of the fjord, called Aurlandsfjord, is a 17-kilometre arm of the world’s second longest fjord, the Sognefjord (204 km). It is considered to be one of the most picturesque fjords in the world. Arrive in Flåm, where you will have a short time to discover the small village and take a drinks break in one of the cafes before boarding the famous Flamsbana to Myrdal – a mountain railway station and junction located about 13km from the village Flam. Flåmsbana, one of the steepest and most scenic railway journeys in the world. The line runs through fantastic nature and scenery with steep mountains, waterfalls and through 20 tunnels as it winds its way to Myrdal where you will change trains for the last part of your journey to Oslo. On arrival check-in to your hotel for a two-night stay.

After breakfast meet the local guide in the hotel reception for the start of the 3 hour sightseeing tour of Norway’s vibrant capital city (the exact meeting time will be confirmed in the information provided and in the reception area). The tour includes a visit to Frogner Park with Vigeland sculptures; the Royal Palace; City Hall and Akershus Fortress, a medieval castle showing the history of Oslo. The rest of the day is at leisure for you to continue visiting the sights or relax in one of the delightful cafes taking in the city atmosphere.
