This motorhome itinerary offers you a wonderfully independent self-drive holiday and features some iconic locations in the 'land of the white cloud'. With recommended 2-night stays in the Coromandel, Lake Wanaka, Te Anau and Mt Cook, visit geothermal Rotorua, dual World Heritage Listed Tongariro, magnificent Fiordland National Park and alpine Mt Cook. With plenty of opportunities for hiking and adventure, discover the natural wonders of NZ.

Designed so that you can be completely self-sufficient and thereby reduce your day to day living costs, this itinerary is especially suited to the independent traveller. Offering ultimate flexibility, you have the choice of following our suggested itinerary and pre-booking your overnight campsite stops or to book your motorhome rental only and vary the itinerary as you travel.

Based on all inclusive rental this holiday also includes airport transfers, 2 nights hotel accommodation, the Interislander ferry, and comprehensive travel documents.

We recommend pre-booking campsites during peak season in New Zealand, from mid-November to late February. The itinerary can also be done in reverse, starting in Christchurch and ending in Auckland.

Day 1: Arrive Auckland

Arrive in Auckland and take an airport shuttle to your Auckland City Hotel. Spend the remainder of the day at leisure.
Overnight: Grand Mercure Auckland (2 nights).

Day 2: Auckland

Spend a full day at leisure to explore the beautiful 'City of Sails' or beyond. You may wish to take a tour of the city or a trip to the Waitakere Ranges and the dramatic black sand beaches of Auckland's West Coast.

Day 3: Auckland – Whitianga (193 kms)

Today you will be transferred by seat-in-coach shuttle to the Maui Motorhome depot near Auckland Airport to collect your motorhome. After a thorough briefing, collection and orientation of the vehicle, a stop is recommended at the airport's supermarket where you will be able to stock up with supplies before heading south. Depart Auckland and make your way south to Whitianga, on the west coast of the Coromandel Peninsula. Spend the remainder of the day at leisure.
Overnight: Hot Water Beach Top 10 Holiday Park. (2 nights)

Day 4: Whitianga

Enjoy a full day at leisure to explore the beautiful Coromandel Peninsula.

Day 5-6: Whitianga – Rotorua (233 kms)

Take a leisurely drive to Rotorua today. You may wish to travel via Tauranga in the Bay of Plenty with a short detour to Mount Maunganui - a popular beach town. Spend the remainder of the day at leisure. The following day is also free for you to explore.
Overnight: Rotorua Thermal Holiday Park (2 nights).

Day 7-8: Rotorua - Tongariro National Park (152 kms)

Today please make your way to Whakapapa Village in the Tongariro National Park and spend the remainder of the day at leisure. The following day perhaps enjoy a guided half or full day walk on the famous Tongariro Alpine Crossing, renowned as one of the finest one day walks in the world.

Day 9: Tongariro National Park - Wellington (331kms)

Depart Tongariro and make your way to Wellington City.
Overnight: Wellington Top 10 Holiday Park.

Day 10: Wellington - Picton - Kaikoura (156 kms)

Enjoy your journey today on the Interislander ferry across the magnificent Cook Strait (approx. 3 hours) to Picton. Your motorhome travels with you on board the ferry. On arrival in Picton continue south along the wonderful eastern coastal route to the whale watching capital, Kaikoura.
Overnight: Kaikoura Top 10 Holiday Park (2 nights).

Day 11: Kaikoura

Spend today at your leisure in Kaikoura. Perhaps enjoy a whale-watching tour by boat or by plane (optional, at extra cost) or one of the fine walks in the region.

Day 12: Kaikoura – Hokitika (365 kms)

Please make your way to the charming town of Hokitika on the West Coast via the Lewis Pass. Enroute you might like to visit Hanmer Springs, a delightful alpine spa town offering a chance to relax in some wonderful mineral spa pools.
Overnight: Shining Star Holiday Park.

Day 13: Hokitika - Franz Josef (135 kms)

Depart Hokitika today this morning for the drive down the West Coast to Franz Josef. Spend the remainder of the day at leisure.
Overnight: Rainforest Retreat Holiday Park (2 nights).

Day 14: Franz Josef

Spend the day at leisure in Franz Josef. Glacier country offers a range of wonderful activities, including scenic helicopter flights with glacier landing and guided walks.
Overnight: Rainforest Holiday Park (2 nights).

Day 15: Franz Josef – Lake Wanaka (285 kms)

Head further south today to tranquil Lake Wanaka in the heart of the Southern Lakes region.
Overnight: Mt Aspiring Holiday Park (2 nights).

Day 16: Lake Wanaka

Free day to explore Lake Wanaka and surrounds. You may like to enjoy one of many superb walking trails, take a jet boat ride into Mt Aspiring National Park, drive across the dramatic Crown Range to Queenstown or just relax and enjoy the view.

Day 17: Lake Wanaka - Te Anau (228 km, around 2 hrs 50 mins)

Please make your way to Te Anau today – this charming town is the gateway to Fiordland National Park, the largest of New Zealand’s national parks and a major part of the Te Wahipounamu World Heritage site.
Overnight: Te Anau Top 10 Holiday Park (2 nights).

Day 18: Te Anau

Spend the day at leisure in the Te Anau area, perhaps explore Milford or Doubtful Sound on one of the nature cruises (must be pre-booked). Learn about the history of the region and benefit from the knowledge of a specialist nature guide.

Day 19: Te Anau - Mount Cook (420 kms)

Please make your way to the heart of the Southern Alps and majestic Mount Cook today. Your Holiday Park this evening is located just 18kms from the Mt Cook National Park and Village – and has to be one of the most stunning campsite locations in the world!
Overnight: Glentanner Holiday Park (2 nights).

Day 20: Mt Cook

Spend your day at leisure in the wonderful alpine setting of the Mount Cook region. You may like to enjoy a 4x4 guided tour or a glacier boat cruise. The Sir Edmund Hillary Alpine Centre located at the Hermitage Hotel is well worth a visit.
Overnight: Glentanner Holiday Park

Day 21: Mount Cook – Christchurch (329 kms)

Travel to Christchurch today and spend the remainder of the day at leisure exploring this remarkable city. You may like to visit the Botanical Gardens or the Cardboard Cathedral.
Overnight: Christchurch Top 10 Holiday Park.

Day 22: Depart Christchurch

Make your way to the Maui Motorhome depot near Christchurch Airport and return your vehicle. A complimentary transfer via shuttle is available to Christchurch Airport for your departing flight.
