Overview

Enjoy access to some of the hardest to reach places on the planet on this one-of-a-kind activity focused voyage, incorporating travel by ship, Zodiac and helicopter. Greenland’s southern tip is an adventure seeker’s paradise, boasting the greatest variety of landscapes in the country, where sheltered waterways meet soaring mountains. Sail the icy waters of the rarely traversed southern coast before exploring the lush southern tip and immerse yourself in its landscape on an included heli-flightseeing trip.

Explore Greenland’s fertile southern coast, nicknamed Arctic Patagonia, a region which perfectly designates itself to an ultra-adventurous Greenland experience. This is where Erik the Red gave Greenland its name, everywhere you look offers vistas of icy blue waters set against a backdrop of soaring mountains, crystal clear waterfalls and lush valleys. Up in the air, you may find yourself ascending cascading coastal glaciers and stepping out onto the vast polar plateau of the Greenland Ice Sheet.

For those wanting to maximise the adventure element of the trip, there is also the opportunity to add on mountain biking, camping or Alpine kayaking (for an additional charge).

Itinerary

Your adventure begins in Reykjavik, Iceland. Meet with your fellow expeditioners at the airport and board your charter flight to Narsarsuaq in South Greenland before boarding the ship.

Explore the highlights of Southern Greenland. Many factors play a role in shaping the expedition’s itinerary, including sea, ice and weather conditions, but your Expedition Team will ensure you see as much as possible with regular shore landings and Zodiac cruises.

As stunning as the polar landscapes are from your ship, they’re even more striking from the air; flying provides access to places to you could not otherwise access by ship or Zodiac. Conditions permitting, you may have the opportunity for heli-hiking and a heli-landing on the Greenland ice sheet. Each day your expedition team will plan excursions deep in the southern fjords systems, which may also include a chance to dip a kayak in the water. Each included activity provides a different way to experience the diverse, dramatic landscapes and rich Arctic wildlife on offer in the region.

Disembark in Narsarsuaq and spend the day visiting surrounding sites. Possible options include the villages of Igaliku, where you can wander the ruins of the Gardar cathedral, the largest church in Greenland in the Middle Ages and Brattahlid, where you can explore the remains of Erik the Red’s estate. In the evening, board your charter flight back to Reykjavik, where you will be transferred to a hotel in nearby Keflavik.

  • The above sample itinerary is based on the 9-day voyage on the Ultramarine. Other departures may vary in duration and routing, i.e. alternative embarkation or disembarkation ports, or include a pre-voyage hotel night. Please speak to our Travel Specialists for specific details.
