Full description

The holiday starts in historic Bergen - with its famous colourful and iconic warehouse façade, you cannot fail to be impressed by the city. Maybe less known for its walking possibilities, but take the cable car from the centre of town up to Mount Floyen and you'll soon see the options for exploring this area on foot. You can also start walking from the city itself but be prepared for a strenuous climb! There is a variety of marked trails whether you want a short stroll to a half day hike, and if you want even more options then there is always Mount Ulriken, the highest of the mountains surrounding Bergen at 643 metres!

Take the train from Bergen to Voss and then the very handy bus service towards Gudvangen, which stops near the Hotel Stalheim, where you'll be based for 3 nights, perfectly located at the head of Naeroyfjord. Getting out on foot is the best way to make the most of this fabulous area and all the walks start from the front door of the hotel. Either explore the immediate area, take a relatively easy hike up to Nali (meaning 'the Needle') for a spectacular view across the Naeroy valley, and also look down over the Stalheim hairpin bends which have remained almost unchanged for the last century.

With two free days you may want to head out onto the hiking paths around Stalheim once again but if not, how about part of one the most iconic journeys, Norway in a nutshell? This includes a chance to travel along the Naeroyfjord taking in the magnificent views from the water. On arrival in Flam, you have the opportunity to ride the famous 'corkscrew railway' said to be one of the steepest and most scenic rail journeys in the world. The 29 km branch line, dating from the 1920's, climbs 900m through twists, turns and tunnels including a couple of 180 degree bends, hugging sheer mountainsides, travelling over breathtaking drops, past elegant waterfalls and other incredible features, to the junction at Myrdal. You could also consider a single ticket then hike home or even rent bicycles to get you back to Flam - the 20 km or so journey is pretty much downhill all the way!

Itinerary & Accommodation

Itinerary & Accommodation

Day 1: fly to Bergen

Fly to Bergen. Take the Flybus service into the city centre (payable locally) and stay for two nights at Clarion Hotel Admiral or similar on breakfast basis.

Day 2: At leisure in Bergen

A full day in Bergen to explore this historic city or perhaps take one of the cable cars to Mount Floyen or Mount Ulriken - once high above Bergen, many hiking routes are available to you from an easy stroll to some more demanding options.

Day 3: Journey to Stalheim

Leave Bergen in the morning and take the train to Voss (included), change here and journey by bus towards Gudvangen (payable locally, price approx. NOK 80 one-way). Alight at Hotel Stalheim where you will stay for three nights. In the afternoon, perhaps take a short walk from the hotel where the views will no doubt wet your appetite for the following few days.

Day 4: Exploring Stalheim and the surrounding area

A range of walks are available - either climb up into the Naeroy valley for views across this incredible area or take a longer option, along part of the old postal route between Bergen and Oslo. Here you'll encounter a combination of terrain and scenery and after reaching Haugsvik, you can either walk back along the road to Stalheim or take public transport.

Day 5: Exploring Naeroyfjord

A day for a longer more challenging hike, perhaps? One option is to explore the Brekkedalen and Jordalen valleys through a circular walk starting and ending at your hotel - this is not too strenuous in terrain but it is a full day walk so is only suitable for those with a reasonable fitness level. Another option is part of the Norway in a Nutshell tour - the bus from Stalheim will take you to Gudvangen from where you can travel by boat along Naeroyfjord for a very different view of the fjord. Explore Flam, ride the corkscrew railway or take advantage of the hiking opportunities in the Flamsdalen before returning to Hotel Stalheim.

Day 6: depart Bergen

Take the bus from Hotel Stalheim back to Voss (payable locally), then the train west towards Bergen city centre (included) - finally the Flybus to Bergen Flesland Airport (payable locally) for your evening flight home.
