Overview

Norway has countless hiking opportunities suitable for all levels of enthusiastic walkers – many of which are famous for the challenge and stunning scenery. For the ultimate test, this escorted small group tour takes you to three of the most iconic locations in the Norwegian fjords – Trolltunga, The Pulpit Rock and Folgefonna Glacier, as well as some wonderful hidden gems. Trekking for several hours each day, encounter the sheer beauty and magnificence of the mountain landscape and fjords, making new friends and conquering new heights along the way. In hiking terms it doesn’t get any better than this!

Working in conjunction with an experienced adventure and expedition company, this small group tour is led by an English speaking guide and is limited to just twelve participants on each departure.

In a small and sociable group, you first tackle Trolltunga on the longest trek of the tour and one of Norway’s coolest viewpoints. Experience Folgefonna glacier, walking on a thick carpet of ice while roped to your companions.

Visit Preikestolen (The Pulpit Rock), situated high above the Lysefjord, which has long been one of the most photographed and famous locations in the fjords.

The last full day you will start early with a ferry through Lysefjorden, then journey to tackle the dramatic Kjerag hike perched 1000 meters above the fjord, before a scenic drive to Dalen for the night. Where you will then travel back to Oslo the following journey.

About the Hikes

The hikes are relatively long, going out every day for five days in a row, so a good level of fitness and some hiking experience is recommended. The hardest hike is to Trolltunga on day 2, it can take up to 12 hours in total. The other days are generally about 4-6 hours hiking.

Itinerary

On arrival at Oslo Airport and make your way to the central hotel (payable locally), either by the local train or airport coach service. The rest of the day is at leisure to explore Norway’s capital city, before meeting up for the escorted tour the following morning.

Meet your tour guide and fellow hikers and head towards the mountains, stopping at points of interest along the way. Around lunchtime, visit the Heddal Stave Church, one of Norway’s largest Stave Churches. You will also go for a short walk at Haukeliseter, before you drive on to  Tyssedal and your hotel for the night. Here you’ll settle in for a 2-night stay, enjoying a traditional Norwegian dinner, and the chance to go through the itinerary with your guide.

People come from all over the world to experience the challenge of Trolltunga, and today it is your turn! The Troll’s Tongue is a spectacular mountain formation situated 1,100 metres above sea level, and 700 metres above the lake of Ringdal. This is a long trek of 8-11 hours, but it is both doable and worth the trip! At the top you will take time to relax and take photos out on the tongue itself. You will then make your way back down and return to the hotel for a well earned dinner.

This morning travel to Folgefonna National Park for a full day walk (4-6 hours) on the Folgefonna glacier, Norway’s third largest glacier. Trekking on the glacier is not particularly difficult, but it is a truly magnificent experience walking roped to your companions on the thick carpet of ice. When the weather allows the view of the surrounding fjord landscape is breathtaking. During this trek, the pace is gentle, taking the time to enjoy the company and the beautiful scenery. Later head to Rosendal for an overnight stay.

Today you’ll head to the famous Preikestolen Fjellstue. From the hotel, the drive takes around 5-6 hours through beautiful coastal scenery. During the day there are often many people visiting the plateau, so the 3-5 hour hike to the rock will be taken in the evening to enjoy the late sunshine after the tourists have left for the day. Return to your mountain lodge accommodation for an overnight stay.

Today make an early start to catch the early ferry to Lysebotn. Enjoy breakfast on the go as you cruise through the stuning Lysefjorden, known as the Fjord of Light. Disembark and continue the journey by vehicle along Norway’s winding roads to reach the starting point of the iconic hike to Kjerag, which is located 1000 meters above the Lysefjord. The entire trip usually takes around 6-7 hours round trip. Back at the starting point, you will have the opportunity to enjoy a cup of coffee or a well-deserved refreshment. Then a three hour drive takes you to your last overnight stay. Dalen is a charming and beautiful Norwegian town where you can relax and reflect on your journey together. In the evening, you will enjoy your last dinner together at the hotel.

You will wake up to a delicious breakfast at the hotel. From here you have an optional morning walk in the surrounding area to stretch your legs and enjoy the spectacular surroundings of Dalen. When you return from the walk, you pack up your things and jump in the minibus to begin the four hour drive back to Oslo.

Make your way to Oslo airport in time for your flight (payable locally), or extend your stay for a night or two in Norway’s capital city.
