This tour will visit all the main highlights of Johannesburg, South Africa’s commercial and financial capital and Soweto, the oldest township in the country.
Start by taking a look around the city’s northern suburbs, before continuing to the hustle and bustle of Hillbrow and Braamfontein, home of the Constitutional Court of South Africa. Then drive through the downtown area to the Carlton Centre, for views of Johannesburg from the viewing deck on the 50th floor.
Next you will travel to Soweto (short for South Western Township). The area is famous for its role in the struggle against apartheid, and there are many sites of historical significance found here. This sprawling ‘city within a city’ is now the largest black residential area in South Africa, home to approximately 3.5 million people. During your visit to Soweto, you will have a tour of all the major points of interest, such as the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital (the largest hospital in the world), Freedom Square, Hector Pieterson Memorial (site of the famous Soweto uprising of 16 June 1976) and Vilakazi Street (former home to Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu).
Please note: you will need to pay an entrance fee of ZAR120 locally (approximately £7).
