The concept of Kolarbyn is to keep the old traditions of charcoaling alive by using environmentally friendly accommodation built in natural materials, replicating the type used for generations. It has a collection of twelve huts with two beds in each and a mattress and sheepskin rugs to sleep on. All the huts have a fireplace which keeps the inside very cosy, even on cold nights. You cook your own meals over the open fire, you fetch your own water from the spring nearby, chop your own firewood, light the fire and enjoy time with your travelling companions reminiscing on the day’s events. There is a lovely sauna floating on the lake for guests to use, and can be booked locally for private use.
Please note, there is no electricity or running water here, but no problem, after a short time getting used to the facilities you soon appreciate the raw beauty of this environment. It’s a magical place, and one everybody should experience. Please refer to the accommodation section for more information on Kolarbyn Ecolodge.
In search for wildlife
This 3-night package includes two evening tours with professional wildlife guides. The first venture out is a beautiful boat ride at sunset on the lake. The tour starts with an introduction and guidelines on how best to increase chances of seeing the beaver, but with sightings on every departure for many years the expect guides have a fantastic track record. After a short walk learning about their habitat you sit down for an outdoor evening meal. Then its time to cruise the lake in rubber boats in search of beaver and other wildlife. The tour lasts approximately 5-6 hours.
The next evening takes you on a moose safari. With a short introduction to the tour you are transferred by mini-bus to a forest where you enjoy an outdoor meal followed by time walking in the pine forest and driving through woods in search of Moose and other wildlife in their natural habitat. Again the expert guides have encountered Moose on every tour in over 10 years, and is not uncommon to see as many as 10-20 in one evening. The tour lasts approximately 5 hours.
On the last day, you also have the opportunity to extend your adventure with an extra night spent on a Wolf Howling tour, sleeping in a tent in wolf territory. Please note, this is only available on selected Thursdays during July to September. For many guests this is a real highlight of the wildlife adventure and a very unusual experience.
The Wolf tour starts at 1pm from Udden Guesthouse in Baggbron Village, a 10 minute drive from Kolarbyn. You meet up with one of Sweden's foremost Wolf experts who gives an in depth lecture on wolves and work by the Scandinavian Wolf Project. In the afternoon you make your way to the wolf territory and set up the tented camp. A fire is lit and an outdoor meal is cooked by the guide. As night falls you head out and look for tracks and listen for sounds of these amazing creatures. While few people ever get the chance to see a wolf, many guests have heard the howling, a hair raising experience. Late at night you return to the camp and sleep well in the tents with sleeping bags, inflatable mats and pillows provided.
In the morning, depending on the group and what was seen the previous evening you can head out again in search for fresh tracks. Later in the morning pack up the tent and travel back to the guesthouse for a well deserved brunch.
Nature to City lights
It may seem this remote location is far from civilisation, but only 2 hours drive away is Sweden's capital city Stockholm. Add additional nights at the beginning or end of your nature experience and enjoy the culture and attractions of this vibrant city.

Itinerary & Accommodation
Itinerary & Accommodation
Fly to Stockholm Arlanda airport, arriving late morning. On arrival collect a rental car and drive to Kolarbyn Eco-lodge, located 4km south-east of the small town Skinnskatteberg. The check-in here is between 2pm to 3pm when you are met by a guide for an introduction. Light some candles and feel at home in the cosy hut before the first activity. Walk down to the lake where the canoes are ready, the ideal way to explore the lake and surrounding forest. If you wish to relax instead, light a camp fire and enjoy the peaceful surroundings. As the night falls stoke up the fire in your hut for a cosy nights sleep.
The meals are self-catered with basic ingredients available from the food store, but there is a supermarket in the village for fresh foods and a wider selection.
An organic breakfast for self service is offered every day from the storage facility with porridge, eggs, coffee/tea, bread, milk and juices available. The whole day is free to explore the surrounding area. You can hike in the woods, explore the lake by canoe, relax at the beach, go for a swim, pick berries, chop wood and just relax by the camp fire.
In the evening the guide takes you out on a Beaver safari. First travel by mini-bus to another lake nearby and receive an introduction to the tour. Then enjoy an outdoor meal cooked over the fire before heading out on the lake in search of beavers and other wildlife. The trip lasts into the night, return back to the lodge, light the fire in your hut and warm up before bed.
Enjoy another day in the forest or use the rental car to explore the surrounding area. Visit the Royal Palace of Stromsholm, the Engelsberg Ironworks in Fagersta, listed as a Unesco World Heritage site, the Vastanfors Homestead Park and museum located alongside the Stromsholm Canal, the medieval town of Arboga and the Sala Silver mine, one of the world’s best preserved mine settings.
In the late afternoon the guide meets you for the Moose safari. Travel by mini-bus to another part of the forest, receive information on these majestic animals and enjoy a meal cooked over the open fire. Then walk through the woods and travel by road in search of Moose and other wildlife. Return back to Kolarbyn in the evening.
Have breakfast and check out of the lodge by 12.00. You have the choice of driving back to Stockholm airport for your flight home; spend some time in Stockholm and explore this great city; extend your nature experience and join the Wolf Howling tour with overnight in a tent in wolf territory; or stay longer in the Vastmanland region and stay in comfort in one of the many accommodation choices available.
