Overview

The Reykjanes Peninsula in the south-west corner of Iceland offers a great base for a short break amongst the lava fields and other natural wonders for which the land of fire and ice is known. Based at the modern and cosy Northern Light Inn for three nights, this holiday allows time for a leisurely independent exploration of the Golden Circle and also includes a fantastic guided small-group tour of the volcanic landscapes, rugged coastlines and small fishing villages of the Reykjanes UNESCO Global Geopark. Also included is a guided hike to Iceland’s most recent eruption site at Fagradalsfjall, which started producing vivid scarlet lava flows in March 2021.

Visiting the Fagradalsfjall Volcano

A highlight of this trip is a full day tour by Superjeep, including a guided hike into the dramatic Geldingardalur valley, home of the Fagradalsfjall eruption site. Here you can witness the raw power of planet earth, with steaming vents, fissures and lava flows creating an unforgettable spectacle. You’ll also visit the natural attractions of the Reykjanes Peninsula. Cross the bridge between two continents, walk around the steamy Krysuvik mud pools, be amazed by the mysterious Gunnuhver geothermal area or head to Reykjanesviti beach, where Iceland’s oldest lighthouse sits against a rocky backdrop.

You may also wish to add on an optional helicopter flight for an alternative perspective over this ever-changing landscape – pre-booking essential.

Explore and relax in equal measure

A full day is also available to spend at leisure, perhaps driving the famous Golden Circle Route to see geysirs and waterfalls, or relaxing in the rejuvenating geothermal waters of the Blue Lagoon, just a stone’s throw from the Northern Light Inn. If you would like to extend your stay in Iceland, the capital Reykjavik and countless wonders of the south coast are just a short drive away.

With so many of Iceland's natural wonders on the doorstep, you'll have plenty of options for filling your days with adventure and come winter, you can opt to spend your evenings in the hotel’s observation lounge, looking out for the northern lights.

Northern Light Inn

Located a short drive from Keflavik airport, within walking distance of the Blue Lagoon, and the closest hotel to Iceland’s most recent volcanic eruption site at Fagradalsfjall, the Northern Light Inn offers a perfect ‘home away from home’ for this 3-night break. A stunning location from which to see northern lights in the winter with dedicated lounge and optional wake up call service, the hotel is also a great summer retreat from which to take advantage of the endless hours of daylight. The modern wellness spa at the hotel featuring saunas, a steam room and a relaxation room is complimentary to all Discover the World guests who book this 3-night break. And whilst there you can even book yourself in for a floating therapy in one of Iceland’s only floating bubbles.

Day 2 Fagradalsfjall Volcano Hike & the Reykjanes Peninsula by Superjeep

Today you will be collected from the hotel for your Superjeep adventure. Your day beings with a guided hike to the Fagradalsfjall Volcano. The level of volcanic activity will continue to change and evolve, but the newly solidifying lava flows will stand testament to this incredible phenomenon long after the eruption has died down. The hiking trail is moderately challenging and takes around 1.5 hours each way, with time available at the eruption sight for photo opportunities. After the hike back you’ll continue by Superjeep on an immersive exploration of the Reykjanes Peninsula, taking in bubbling mudpools, lava formations and tectonic plates. Lunch is included during your tour.
